School middle leaders as instructional leaders: building the knowledge base of instruction-oriented middle leadership

Purpose This paper aims to explore developments over the past 25 years in knowledge base on instruction-oriented middle leadership schools. The authors document trends literature since began attract scholarly interest late 1990s and shifting structural content patterns base. Design/methodology/approach use a topographic methodology analyse both elements major results drawing from 147 peer-reviewed journal articles. Findings draw review's outcomes propose model that frames core set of leaders' instructional practices. They also identify personal, departmental, organizational external influences shaping practices lack research conducted outside Anglo–American societies. gap suggests need for increased study different national settings systems how these influence practice enactment leaders around instruction. There is employ greater range methodologies understand roles. Research limitations/implications lays foundation future development instruction highlights signposts guide inquiry. Originality/value contributes leader by focussing their leadership.
